The International One Metre is by far the most popular class today for radio controlled yacht racing, largely because the rules specifically ban expensive high-tech materials and techniques, and have been cleverly written to keep everything relatively simple and affordable, or at any rate, simple and affordable when compared to most other classes. The original Spirit IOM has been available for several years now, and the design proved fully competitive in all sailing conditions. Even the best things can be improved though, and after extensive testing of a number of prototypes, Spirit II which is pictured here, was raced extensively, it proved to be highly competitive in all weathers, and a significant improvement on the original design. However, we thought that a little extra freeboard, mainly around the bows, would improve the boat still further, especially in rougher conditions of the kind we often experience here in Poole, and this further updated configuration (Spirit III) is the result, together with a new moulded skiff type deck, and this very latest version with added freeboard has now entered production. The only items available from Kingston Mouldings are the lightweight moulded fibreglass hull and (optional) skiff deck. A carbon keel and rudder, as well as all other necessary fittings and sails can be obtained from a number of specialist UK model yachting suppliers. You can also buy exactly the same hull& deck mouldings shown below, but as a package with all other parts (carbon keel, deck fittings, sails etc) needed to build a competitive boat, from our friends at Nylet Yachts, their contact details can be found on the 'Useful Links' page, and Nylet call this latest version Spirit III. The original Spirit was supplied with a full-size printed plan with a few helpful notes added. The current version comes with a PDF file that details every aspect of construction with text and illustrations, and I e-mail this to customers when I send their hull. There are still many people without e-mail or computers though, and for a small extra charge I can print out this file and send it with the hull, let me know which you'd prefer when you send your order.
